Project Name
Enhancing municipal disaster prevention through enabling neighbourhood and household level emergency management

Principal Investigator
Brenda Murphy, Gordon McBean, Paul Kovacs, Leanna Falkiner and Holly Dolan

Objective
This research project will investigate methods to establish, integrate and provide training to neighbourhood representatives who would encourage local mitigative actions resulting in a heightened municipal preparedness level. Through empowering local residents at the household and nieghbourhood levels, we can increase community resiliency by bridging the gap between individual and municipal adaptation to natural hazards. These activities include the identification and assessment of the micro-level resources available, factors that influence individual risk perceptions, and strategies that aid in disaster preparedness and resiliency. Secondly the study will identify opportunities to link these mechanisms with municipal level emergency management planning. The analysis will examine, from social, political and economic perspectives the incentives and barriers associated with implementing disaster prevention activities. Findings of the study will benefit households, neighbourhoods and communities within Canadian municipalities.
