ICLR's priorities

The Institute's work is built around four priorities:

Build safer communities
ICLR has established a partnership with leading researchers at the University of Western Ontario, McGill University, Dalhousie University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Waterloo and elsewhere. Current research priorities include reducing wind and earthquake damage to housing, understanding hazard risk management, enhancing government science related to natural disasters, and improving community actions for hazard mitigation.

Establish safety partnerships
Effective partnerships are essential to reduce vulnerability to natural disasters. Collaboration is a powerful way to build a community's ability to resist hazards, despite the chronic shortfall in resources available to support disaster loss prevention.

Enhance industry awareness
ICLR runs a series of workshops to bring together the research, business and hazard management communities to discuss all aspects of disaster prevention. This includes monthly workshops to review emerging research and a national conference program.

Promote consumer awareness
Equipping the public with disaster loss prevention knowledge can be one of the most effective means to reduce catastrophic losses. The Institute is becoming increasingly active in this area as a solid foundation of knowledge about appropriate strategies continues to build.
