Paul Kovacs - Executive Director (email) Trained as an economist, Paul Kovacs has 26 years of work experience in public policy formation. In 1977, he was an economic policy advisor to the Premier of Saskatchewan. In 1978, he joined the Economic Council of Canada, where he authored a number of publications identifying actions to reduce unemployment in Eastern Canada. In 1981, Paul joined the Canadian Manufacturers' Association, where he was one of the leading spokesmen for the manufacturing community on issues such as free trade and tax reform. (...more)
Gordon McBean - Chair, Policy (email) Dr. Gordon McBean received his B.Sc. in Physics and Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and also holds a M.Sc. in Meteorology from McGill University. He was a scientist at Environment Canada from 1970 to 1988 when appointed Professor and Chair of the Atmospheric Science Program at UBC. In 1992, he was appointed Head of the Department of Oceanography. From 1994 to 2000, he was Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for the Meteorological Service of Environment Canada. (...more)
Slobodan Simonovic - Chair, Engineering (email) Dr. Simonovic has over twenty-five years of research, teaching and consulting experience in water resources engineering. He teaches courses in civil engineering and water resources systems and actively works for national and international professional organizations such as the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, the International Association of Hydrological Sciences and the International Hydrologic Program of UNESCO. He has received a number of awards for excellence in teaching, research and outreach. Dr. Simonovic has been invited to present special courses for practicing water resources engineers in many countries. He is serving as the associate editor of two water resources journals, and participates actively in the organization of national and international meetings. He has over 250 professional publications. Dan Sandink- Manager, Resilient Communities & Research (email) Dan Sandink joined ICLR's Toronto office in 2006 following graduate work at the University of Western Ontario.Dan's work is largely in the area of the human dimensions of hazards, particularly the social aspects of urban flooding.At the ICLR, Dan is responsible for the development of a community level disaster resilience program, which aims to increase the capacity of municipalities in Canada to mitigate natural hazard risk.(...more)
Greg Oulahen - Research Associate(email) Greg Oulahen joined ICLR in May 2008 upon completion of graduate studies in Geography at the University of Waterloo. Greg’s research has concentrated on hazard mitigation through land use planning, and includes a detailed investigation of the role of citizen participation in planning for flood reduction in Peterborough, Ontario.
